Enclosure, Knockfune, Co. Tipperary

On the south-east-facing slope of a hill at Knockfune in County Tipperary, there is a circular enclosure that most people have never noticed, and that the Ordnance Survey itself stopped bothering to mark after 1843.

It is not dramatically ruined, nor dramatically preserved. It has simply been levelled, leaving behind a faint circular impression in the pasture, roughly 32 metres across, outlined by a low and broad bank. That near-disappearance is part of what makes it quietly interesting.

The site appears clearly on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, published in 1843, as a circular enclosure. By the time the revised edition was produced in 1904, it had been omitted, presumably because the feature had by then been sufficiently reduced that surveyors no longer considered it worth recording. Circular enclosures of this type are among the most common class of monument in the Irish landscape; they are generally understood as the enclosed homesteads of early medieval farming families, defined by an earthen bank and sometimes a ditch, within which a household and its associated buildings would have sat. Their near-circular form and their tendency to sit on gently sloping ground, often with a south or east aspect for shelter and light, are both features that Knockfune shares. What is unusual here is simply the degree to which the place has faded, surviving only as a broad, shallow ring just discernible underfoot in the grass.
