Enclosure, Fertiana, Co. Tipperary

On the gentle slope above the River Suir's floodplain in Fertiana, a roughly oval earthwork sits in the landscape in a way that does not quite fit the usual categories.

It is not a ringfort, though two of those, circular enclosures typical of early medieval Ireland and associated with farmsteads, are visible from where it stands, one to the south-east and one to the north-east. Instead, this enclosure is irregular in shape, elongated on one axis, and defined by a combination of an earthen bank and a wide, flat-bottomed fosse, the term used for the ditch that accompanies such earthen boundaries. That combination of bank and ditch, with the ground dropping away from the enclosure's interior, suggests something deliberately constructed to demarcate space, though precisely what kind of activity it once enclosed remains an open question.

The earthwork measures roughly 38.5 metres across its longer north-west to south-east axis and about 18 metres on the shorter north-east to south-west line. The bank itself is two metres wide, standing just under half a metre above the internal ground surface and over a metre above the exterior, giving it a modest but real presence in the field. The fosse beside it is similarly substantial, more than two metres wide and over half a metre deep. What makes the site particularly interesting is a detail on its north-western edge, where the inner face of the counterscarp, the slope on the far side of the ditch from the bank, is reinforced with a stone revetment. This kind of stonework, lining an earthen feature to prevent slippage or erosion, is not unusual in Irish archaeological contexts, but its presence here hints at a degree of care in the original construction. At some point the enclosure appears to have been absorbed into the working agricultural landscape, with part of it likely repurposed as a field boundary.
