Enclosure, Carrigagown, Co. Tipperary

Not every site on an archaeological inventory turns out to be what it first appeared.

At Carrigagown in County Tipperary, what was once catalogued as an enclosure sits atop a natural rise of rock outcrop in gently rolling countryside, and the closer you look, the less certain the designation becomes. There is no bank, no fosse (the defensive ditch that typically surrounds a prehistoric or early medieval enclosure), and no identifiable entrance feature. What remains is simply an area of natural rock outcrop accompanied by loosely piled field clearance debris, the kind of material that generations of farmers have heaved aside to make their land workable.

The site was assessed by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien for the Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary, published in 2002, and their conclusion was unambiguous: the feature is of doubtful antiquity. That phrase carries real weight in archaeological usage. It does not mean the place is uninteresting; it means the evidence for deliberate, ancient human construction is absent or unconvincing. What looked from a distance, or on an earlier survey, like the remains of a man-made enclosure is more plausibly explained by the natural behaviour of the rock and by the accumulated labour of later farming. The landscape around Carrigagown is undulating, and elevated rock outcrops in such terrain can easily suggest the profile of something purposeful when viewed without close examination.
