Ringfort (Rath), Noan, Co. Tipperary

A road cuts straight through the outer bank of this ancient enclosure in Noan, Co. Tipperary, an intrusion that rather neatly summarises the site's fortunes.

The ringfort sits on a low rise of grassland with open views in every direction, which was very likely the point when it was first constructed, perhaps over a thousand years ago. What survives today is enough to read the original design, but only just.

This is a bivallate ringfort, meaning it was once enclosed by two concentric rings of earthworks rather than the single bank more commonly seen across Ireland. At its centre stood a raised circular platform roughly 23 metres across, originally surrounded by a bank, a fosse (a drainage and defensive ditch), and an outer bank beyond that. The overall diameter reached approximately 50 metres from east to west. The south-west quadrant has been quarried away entirely, leaving a hollow depression around 25 metres long, 15 metres wide, and 2 metres deep, where the platform and its enclosing elements once stood. From the south-east around to the north-west, the outer bank has been variously levelled, filled in, or removed. What remains in reasonable shape runs from the north through the east to the south-east, where the external bank still stands to about 1.5 metres in height. The original enclosing bank around the central platform has been reduced to a scarp, a low earthen slope, rather than a proper raised feature. There is no clear entrance visible anywhere on the circuit.

Cattle grazing on the site have caused further wear, with poaching damage visible on the bank to the north-east and on the outer face of the platform to the north. The overall condition is rated as fair to poor. For a structure that once commanded its local landscape with some authority, what remains is a partial outline, legible to a careful eye but considerably diminished by centuries of quarrying and agricultural use.
