The example at Graiguepadeen in County Tipperary has survived in unusually good condition, sitting atop a natural hillock in rolling pasture with clear sightlines stretching out in every direction, which was precisely the point. That commanding position, chosen perhaps fifteen hundred years ago, still reads clearly in the landscape today.

The enclosure is nearly circular, measuring 51 metres north to south and 53 metres east to west, and the surrounding bank retains much of its original form. At its base the bank runs to 6 metres wide, narrowing to 2 metres at the top, and on its outer face it rises to 2.5 metres, giving a considerably more imposing impression from outside than from within, where the interior height is only around 0.4 metres. The bank is at its most prominent along the arc running from the south-west through the west and round to the north. Elsewhere the monument has suffered the ordinary pressures of a working agricultural landscape: the south-east sector has been reduced to little more than a scarp where field boundaries cut across it, two cattle gaps have been worn through the northern section of the bank, and tree root disturbance has opened a further gap to the east. A modern house stands roughly 20 metres to the south-west, occupying a site where an earlier 19th-century farmhouse and farmyard once stood, suggesting that the hillock and its surroundings have drawn successive generations of occupants for reasons that have not entirely changed across the centuries.
