Enclosure, Priorpark, Co. Tipperary

A few hundred metres north-north-east of Priorpark House in County Tipperary, a roughly circular earthwork sits quietly in the rolling grounds, its purpose still open to question.

What makes it particularly curious is the ring of mature beech trees growing along its bank, which has led to the suggestion that the enclosure may have been deliberately planted as a tree-ring, a fashionable landscape feature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in which trees were set in a circle, often atop an existing earthwork, as an ornamental or demesne accent. Whether that was its original purpose is another matter entirely.

The enclosure measures roughly 31.6 metres north to south and 34.6 metres east to west, making it a substantial feature on the ground despite its low profile. It is defined by an inner bank, a fosse (a ditch, in essence), and a secondary outer bank to the west that merges with the inner bank at the north before fading out towards the south-west. The inner bank is revetted along its northern to south-eastern arc with drystone walling, a detail suggesting some care in its original construction. The interior slopes gently to the east, and there is no visible entrance feature, which complicates any straightforward reading of the site. By 1840, when the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map was produced, it was already shown as an irregular, tree-covered area, meaning its earlier character had already been obscured. Whether the earthwork beneath the beeches began as a prehistoric enclosure, a ringfort (a type of enclosed farmstead common in early medieval Ireland), or something else, the ground has not yet given a clear answer.
