This one in Moanroe, County Tipperary, offers nothing of the sort. At ground level, on gently eastward-sloping tillage land, there is simply no visible trace of anything at all. The enclosure exists, to all practical purposes, only as a photograph taken from an aircraft.

In May 1977, an aerial survey captured what the ground had long since absorbed: a roughly circular cropmark measuring approximately 35 metres north to south and 32 metres east to west. Cropmarks form when buried features alter the growth rate of surface vegetation, revealing the ghost of a structure to anyone looking down from the right angle and at the right time of year. Neither the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1840 nor the second edition of 1904 recorded anything here, which suggests the enclosure had already lost whatever above-ground presence it once had by the time systematic mapping began. What the enclosure originally was, and when it was built, remains unrecorded. What can be said is that it sits within roughly 30 metres of a ringwork and bailey, a type of fortification introduced to Ireland by the Normans, consisting of a defended ring-shaped enclosure accompanied by an adjoining walled courtyard. Whether the two features are related in date or function is not known, but their proximity on this quiet Tipperary slope is striking enough to prompt the question.
