Ringfort (Rath), Drumlummin, Co. Tipperary

On a hillside in Co. Tipperary, just below the crest of a rise in undulating pastureland, an early medieval settlement sits so thoroughly consumed by scrub and brambles that most of it has effectively disappeared back into the landscape.

The rath at Drumlummin is still there, but only barely legible, which is part of what makes it quietly compelling.

A ringfort, known in Irish as a ráth when defined primarily by an earthen bank and ditch, was the standard farmstead enclosure of early medieval Ireland, typically housing a single family and their livestock. The Drumlummin example is a modest one, measuring roughly 28 metres north to south and 25 metres east to west. Where the vegetation allows a view of the structure, the enclosing boundary takes the form of a scarp, a cut or sloped earthen face, rising to about 1.2 metres, with an outer fosse, essentially a ditch, running alongside it at around 1.8 metres wide and 0.25 metres deep. These are not dramatic dimensions, but they are enough to read the shape of a boundary that was meant to define domestic space, mark ownership, and offer some degree of protection perhaps a thousand or more years ago. A field boundary running along the northwest quadrant in a northeast to southwest direction has further complicated the picture, partly absorbing the ringfort into the working geometry of later agriculture.

Only the southwest quadrant offers any meaningful access to the monument at present, with the interior and most of the perimeter obscured by dense growth. Visitors approaching across the sloping pasture will find the site sitting just off the hilltop, which is itself worth noting: the position gives a sense of why someone might have chosen this ground, with its natural elevation and outlook over the surrounding landscape.
