Enclosure, Magorban, Co. Tipperary

Some archaeological sites announce themselves grandly, with walls still standing or earthworks that cast long shadows.

Others exist only as a whisper in the grass, detectable not by eye on the ground but by the patient scrutiny of aerial photography. The site at Magorban, in County Tipperary, belongs firmly to this second category. Standing in the level pasture where it lies, a visitor would notice almost nothing out of the ordinary. The land simply sits there, quietly going about being a field.

What gave the site away was a cropmark, the kind of subtle discolouration visible from above when buried features cause overlying vegetation to grow differently from the surrounding land, often showing up during dry spells when grass above a ditch or a buried wall responds differently to moisture stress. A 2005 aerial photograph recorded just such a mark here. On the ground, the only physical trace is a gentle, curvilinear depression running approximately forty metres in length and around sixteen metres in width, sitting about ten metres to the west of the likely centre point of whatever once occupied this spot. The depression may be entirely natural in origin, but it peters out at either end in a way that has drawn cautious attention. It could, potentially, represent the very shallow remains of a fosse, the term for the ditch that typically surrounded an enclosure, whether a ringfort, a farmstead, or some other defined space. The ground falls away gently to the east beyond the centre point, and there is little or no definition to the north or south, leaving the character and extent of any original feature genuinely uncertain.
