Enclosure, Ballintemple, Co. Tipperary

A circular enclosure sitting quietly in a field of improved pasture is easy to overlook, and that is precisely what has happened at Ballintemple in County Tipperary.

The monument is now absorbed into the working farmland around it, its earthworks so thoroughly levelled that the outline of an ancient boundary is barely legible at ground level. What survives is not a dramatic ruin but a ghost of one, readable mainly in the subtle rises and hollows of the grass.

The enclosure was identified not by fieldwork but by aerial photography, the oblique angle of a camera capturing what the eye walking the ground would miss. The roughly circular area measures approximately 21 metres east to west and 20 metres north to south. Around its south-eastern arc, the remains of a bank survive, though heavily reduced; its interior height is only around 35 centimetres, the exterior face slightly more pronounced at 45 centimetres. Outside that bank, a shallow fosse, the ditch that would originally have complemented the raised earthwork, can still be traced along the same south-to-north arc, best preserved in its central stretch before petering out at both ends. The entrance appears to have faced roughly east-south-east, where a gap of around nine metres interrupts the bank, and a possible causeway remnant, a low raised crossing over the fosse, may survive at the north-north-west. Enclosures of this type are a common feature of the Irish early medieval landscape, typically serving as the boundary of a farmstead or a higher-status ringfort, though without excavation it is difficult to say more about the date or function of this particular example. A second enclosure of the same class lies roughly 84 metres to the north-north-west, suggesting that this corner of Tipperary was once more densely settled than its current pastoral quiet implies.
