Enclosure, Drumwood, Co. Tipperary

At Drumwood in County Tipperary, a wide earthen bank curves through waterlogged ground, its interior choked with rushes and standing water.

The enclosure is not a dramatic ruin in any conventional sense; there are no stone walls, no towers, no readily legible outline. What survives is a broad ring of raised earth, substantial in its dimensions, sitting quietly in flat, marshy terrain with hills visible to the north and west.

The earthen bank that defines the enclosure measures roughly 4 metres across at the crest and has an overall width of 13.5 metres, with the external face rising to about 1.1 metres and the internal face to a more modest 0.45 metres. These proportions suggest something carefully constructed rather than incidentally accumulated. The enclosure appears to function as a D-shaped annexe to a second, embanked enclosure immediately to its west, with a gap of approximately 6 metres between the northern bank of this feature and that neighbouring monument. An embanked enclosure of this type, defined by earthen rather than stone banks, is a form found across Ireland and frequently associated with early medieval settlement or stock management, though the precise date and purpose of the Drumwood example has not been established. The relationship between the two enclosures is further complicated at the southern end, where the bank broadens and a field bank topped by hedgerow cuts east to west through it, blurring the original boundary. Some 120 metres to the south-east, a bowl-barrow, a type of low, rounded burial mound typical of the Bronze Age, sits in the same flat landscape, hinting that this corner of Tipperary held significance across a long span of time.
