Ringforts

Fort, Corrakeeran, Co. Meath

In the low-lying drumlin country of County Meath, a circular earthwork sits quietly on a slight westward-facing rise, its interior so overgrown that the rock outcrop at its core reads more like a natural feature than anything deliberately engineered.

That ambiguity is part of what makes it worth attention. The site's raised inner platform, roughly eighteen metres across and rising to nearly five metres at its highest point, sits within a much larger enclosure defined by an earthen bank approximately forty-six metres in diameter, and the whole arrangement speaks to the kind of careful, considered construction that was once designed to be seen across a flat landscape.

This is a ringfort, or at least a site that shares the essential grammar of one: a roughly circular enclosure defined by a bank and, in this case, traces of an external fosse, the shallow ditch that would have reinforced the barrier between inside and out. Ringforts were built in early medieval Ireland, broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and served primarily as enclosed farmsteads for families of some local standing. What distinguishes Corrakeeran is the presence of a natural rock outcrop at the centre of the raised inner area, something that may have influenced the choice of location in the first place, given the otherwise flat and drumlin-broken terrain surrounding it. The bank on the eastern side still retains a measurable profile, with a base width of seven metres and an external height of three metres, which is a reasonable mass of earth to have survived in agricultural land. A narrow entrance gap of just over two metres cuts through the bank, and there are traces of a causeway at the east-south-east, suggesting a structured approach across what would once have been the fosse.
