Ringfort (Rath), Drumgill, Co. Meath

At the western edge of a deciduous woodland in Drumgill, County Meath, a circular earthwork sits quietly on a steep north-west-facing slope, its original entrance long since lost to time and vegetation.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a class of monument built predominantly during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, that once served as a defended farmstead enclosure. What makes this particular example quietly arresting is not grandeur but a kind of stubborn persistence: the bank survives, the scarp survives, and even an outer berm on the western side remains legible in the landscape, despite centuries of encroachment by field boundaries and forest.

The earthwork measures roughly 33 metres across and drops about 2.6 metres as the ground falls away to the north-west. On the south-east side, the defining bank still has a base width of 6 metres, rising about 0.8 metres on the interior face and 1.6 metres on the exterior. On the opposite, downslope side, the bank has been worn to a scarp, that is, a clean slope rather than a proper raised bank, with a berm, a flat shelf of ground, sitting beyond it. Two modern field banks have cut into the eastern side of the monument, causing some damage to the perimeter, and the whole enclosure is now hemmed in by a field boundary running along the edge of what was once demesne woodland. No original entrance has been identified, which is not uncommon where the ground has been repeatedly disturbed or where later boundaries have obscured earlier features. A second rath lies roughly 150 metres to the south-east, suggesting this part of Drumgill was once a more densely settled early medieval landscape than it might appear today.
