Enclosure, Carpenterstown, Co. Westmeath

In a field of well-drained grassland in County Westmeath, a small rectangular earthwork sits so close to the ground that it is barely legible to the passing eye.

The enclosure measures roughly 13 metres on its shorter axis and 26 metres on its longer, enclosed by a bank so low and worn that it reads more as a suggestion than a boundary. A possible entrance gap survives at the south-west corner, hinting at deliberate design rather than accidental formation.

What makes this particular site quietly arresting is its context. Just 110 metres to the west stands a ringfort, the more familiar circular enclosure type common across Ireland, typically associated with early medieval farmsteads. The proximity of the two monuments raises questions about their relationship and whether the rectangular enclosure belonged to the same period of activity or represents something older or later. Lough Glore lies some 410 metres to the south-south-west, and a higher ridge overlooks the site from the west, placing the enclosure in a modest but legible landscape of water, elevated ground, and earthwork remains. The earthwork itself had been levelled to the point of near-invisibility by the time a Digital Globe aerial photograph, taken in November 2011, captured its faint outline from above. It is the kind of monument that survives only because cropmarks and soil differences occasionally cooperate with light and season to reveal what centuries of agriculture have otherwise erased.
