Enclosures
Not every site on the archaeological record turns out to be what it seemed.
On a slight rise amid the low-lying boggy land of Creggy in County Westmeath, there is, in practical terms, nothing to see. What was once marked on the 1914 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a possible enclosure has since been levelled entirely, leaving no surface trace. More tellingly, it was never marked as an antiquity on any edition of the OS six-inch map, and the current assessment is that it was probably not an antiquity at all, but simply a small field or paddock of nineteenth-century date. It is, in other words, a place that was almost something, and turned out to be rather ordinary.
