Structure - peatland, Kilmore, Co. Longford

Ritual/Ceremonial
Not everything pulled from a bog arrives with a clear explanation.
In the peatlands of Kilmore in County Longford, a deposit of ancient wood was observed during field survey work in 1989, noted in passing and left to sit somewhere between possibility and doubt. Wood found in peat can survive for thousands of years, preserved by the acidic, oxygen-poor conditions that make raised bogs such remarkable archives of the past. But survival alone does not make something a monument, and in this case the evidence was judged insufficient to confirm the find as the remains of any deliberate human structure.
