Drumm Church, Warren, Co. Roscommon

A rectangular outline of mortared stone foundations, half-obscured by a dumped pile of rubble and bisected by a later field wall, is not most visitors' image of a parish church.

Yet what remains here beside the Boyle River in County Roscommon is almost certainly the site from which the entire parish of Boyle was once administered, quietly predating the better-known Cistercian abbey in the town by centuries.

The church was known as Drum Conaille, appearing in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 under the spelling Drunn, which places it firmly within the medieval diocese before the town of Boyle had fully eclipsed its rural surroundings. Its recorded history ends abruptly in 1487, when Farrell O'Rourke burnt it, an act noted in the Annals of the Four Masters. After that, the building seems to have been abandoned rather than rebuilt, and the site passed gradually into farmland. The ruins measure roughly 16 to 16.5 metres east to west and 9 to 9.5 metres north to south, dimensions consistent with a modest but functional medieval parish church. A souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage of the kind associated with early medieval settlement, lies close by, and the wider field system surrounding the site suggests continuous agricultural use of the land over many centuries. The identification of the site has not always been straightforward either; the nineteenth-century historian D'Alton mistakenly labelled it Eas-mac-neirc in his 1845 account, a confusion that persisted for some time.

The church sits at the foot of a north-facing slope just fifty metres from the southern bank of the Boyle River, roughly a kilometre upstream from where the river empties into Lough Key. The interior of the structure is largely inaccessible beneath the stone dump, but the foundations and the low inward-sloping scarp that defines the outer walls are visible, giving a clear enough sense of the building's original footprint.
