Ringfort (Cashel), Aghacurreen, Co. Roscommon

On the crest of a ridge in Aghacurreen, Co. Roscommon, a grass-covered circle sits quietly on an east-facing slope, its perimeter now reduced to fourteen large stones standing as the last remnants of what was once a substantial drystone enclosure wall.

The rest of the wall has been robbed out over centuries, its material almost certainly repurposed for field boundaries or farm buildings nearby. What remains measures roughly 24.5 metres across internally, a size consistent with a cashel, which is the term used for a ringfort built from stone rather than earthen banks and ditches. These enclosures were typically the defended homesteads of early medieval Irish farming families, and the word cashel itself survives in the place name here.

What makes this particular site more than a ruined farmstead is the cluster of features that surround it. Beneath the interior lies a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber that early medieval communities used for storage and possibly refuge. Nine metres to the south-east sits a mass-rock, a flat stone used as a makeshift outdoor altar during the Penal era, when Catholic Mass was forbidden and priests conducted services in remote locations away from the sight of authorities. The proximity of a prehistoric or early medieval enclosure to a Penal-era mass-rock is not unique in Ireland, but it is always telling; congregations sought out elevated, isolated ground that already carried a sense of boundary and enclosure, and the ridge at Aghacurreen would have served that purpose well. Quarry workings to the north and south-west of the site add another layer, suggesting the area was a source of usable stone across multiple periods, which may also explain why so much of the cashel wall itself has disappeared.
