Fort, Drumloo, Co. Monaghan

On the western shoulder of a drumlin ridge in County Monaghan, just shy of the summit, a circular earthwork sits quietly overlooking Drumloo Lough some 130 metres to the north-west.

It is the kind of site that registers in the landscape as a slight thickening of the hedgerow, a grassy platform ringed by mature trees, something that the eye half-notices and moves past. The enclosure measures nearly 40 metres across its north-west to south-east axis, and what survives of its boundary ranges from a proper earthen bank with hedge along the south and west to a reduced scarp, roughly two metres high, where the perimeter has worn or settled over centuries.

This is a ringfort, or at least what survives of one. Ringforts, circular enclosures defined by banks and ditches, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically serving as enclosed farmsteads for a family and their livestock. The choice of position here is characteristic: a drumlin, one of the smooth elongated hills left by glacial deposition that give this part of Monaghan its rolling, basket-of-eggs terrain, offered both elevation and a commanding view over the surrounding low ground. The lough to the north-west would have made the site easier to monitor and harder to approach unseen. At the north-east, however, the enclosure has been compromised. Farm buildings erected there have eaten into the perimeter and have almost certainly removed whatever original entrance once existed, a loss that is common enough at sites like this, where agriculture and archaeology have overlapped for generations without either fully acknowledging the other.
