Church, Lattonfasky, Co. Monaghan

At the northern end of Lough Egish in County Monaghan, a medieval church sits on a low rise between hills, overlooking a shallow bay.

What makes it quietly strange is how much it reveals about its own interior life, despite the near-total stripping of its dressed stonework. The fabric of the walls still holds the clues: corbel voids, beam-holes, and the ghosts of windows speak to a building that was more elaborately fitted out than its plain shell now suggests.

Known sometimes as Templemoyle, and marked on Jobson's Map of Ulster of 1590 as Temple Egas, this is likely a thirteenth-century parochial church, though no historical records confirm its origins with certainty. It may have served as a chapel-of-ease, that is, a secondary church built to spare parishioners the long journey to the main place of worship, in this case Aughnamullen parish church, which stood at the far western end of a very large parish. The building measures just over twenty metres east to west and just under nine metres north to south. Its eastern gable would have held a single lancet window, the tall narrow form typical of early Gothic ecclesiastical architecture, and a second tall window sat towards the eastern end of the south wall. Most telling is a large beam-hole in the inner face of the south wall, positioned 6.6 metres from the south-east angle. This marks the site of a rood-screen, a timber partition dividing the nave from the chancel, here in a ratio of roughly two to one. Corbel voids near the west end indicate a gallery once stood there, and a window in the west gable, now destroyed, would have lit it. The church sits within an oval graveyard approximately 95 metres by 50 metres, bounded by earthen banks, a hedge, and a stone wall to the north that may have clipped the graveyard's original extent slightly.
