Dromod Railway Station, Dromod, Co. Leitrim

A working railway station that still performs its original job is not, in itself, unusual.

What sets this one apart is how much of its Victorian fabric has simply carried on regardless of the passage of time: the platform canopy still shelters wooden seating, the outbuilding still stands at its shoulder, and the stonework still shows the careful finishing that a nineteenth-century railway company thought worth paying for on what was, after all, a fairly modest wayside stop.

The building dates from around 1885, part of the wave of station construction that accompanied the expansion of Ireland's railway network in the second half of the nineteenth century. It is a detached, four-bay, two-storey structure with a hipped slate roof and rendered chimneystacks, built in snecked stone (masonry laid in irregular courses, but neatly fitted and levelled) with a plinth, quoins, and cut stone dressings around the segmental-headed door and window openings. The sash windows sit in recessed surrounds, and while the main door has been replaced with a glazed timber version with sidelights and an overlight, it follows the proportions of what would have been there originally. To the south, a single-storey outbuilding with timber battened doors abuts the main block, and there is a further return to the rear, both signalling that this was once a small working complex rather than a single isolated building. The platform canopy, with its lean-to slate roof carried on chamfered timber posts, and the sandstone flagstones underfoot, complete a set of features that together read as a fairly complete example of the type of station architecture that railway companies favoured: functional, but finished with enough detail in the stone dressings to mark it as a building meant to represent the company well to the travelling public.

What makes Dromod worth a second look is precisely this survival. Many stations of the period lost their canopies, their outbuildings, or their original joinery long ago, either through disuse or through unsympathetic modernisation. Here, the ensemble of platform, canopy, seating, and ancillary structures remains legible as a group, and the station continues in use, so the fabric is not simply preserved but still doing the job it was built for.
