Hut site, Málainn Bhig, Co. Donegal

Tucked into the southeastern slope of Leahan Mountain in County Donegal, this ancient hut site offers a glimpse into Ireland's distant past.

The small, rectangular structure measures just 1.85 metres by 2.54 metres internally, with sturdy drystone walls nearly a metre thick that still stand about a metre high. Built directly into the hillside, the sunken design would have provided natural insulation and protection from the elements that sweep across these rushy mountain pastures.

The location itself tells a story of careful planning by its ancient builders. Positioned in a small river valley with sweeping views south towards the sea and west to the dramatic cliffs of Slieve League, the site balances practicality with what must have been spectacular vistas. The poorly drained, rush-covered ground might seem inhospitable today, but it sits within a fascinating cluster of similar structures that once formed a small mountain settlement, catalogued by archaeologists as part of site DG089-026.

This wasn't an isolated dwelling but part of a larger community that chose to make their home on these windswept slopes. The concentration of hut sites at Málainn Bhig suggests a thriving settlement, perhaps seasonal or permanent, where people lived, worked, and sheltered together in these compact stone structures. Their remains now dot the landscape, silent testimony to the resourcefulness of those who carved out a living in this challenging but beautiful corner of Donegal.
