Burial Grounds

Graveyard, Kilcrea, Co. Dublin

A concrete wall built in the early 1990s now encloses what was once a working burial ground near the Malahide estuary in north County Dublin.

The wall is utilitarian, entirely modern, and sits in deliberate contrast to the ruined structure inside, where the east gable and side walls of a plain rectangular building still stand amid vegetation that has been quietly reclaiming the site for years. The graveyard is no longer used for burial, and that abandonment is visible in every corner.

The site sits roadside, close to the Malahide estuary, in the townland of Kilcrea. Within the sub-rectangular enclosure, which measures roughly 45 metres in length and 30 metres in width, the surviving fragment of masonry is recorded under the reference DU012-016001. The building itself is unelaborate, a plain rectangular form with no surviving decorative detail noted, which makes precise dating difficult from appearance alone. The concrete boundary wall, whatever its practical purpose in consolidating the site, does mark a moment of intervention; someone in the early 1990s decided this place was worth preserving in some form, even as it ceased to serve its original function. The record was compiled by Geraldine Stout and later updated by Christine Baker, forming part of the broader Archaeological Survey of Ireland.

Access is through an opening in the east wall, and visitors should expect to cross a drainage ditch to get inside. The ground beyond is extremely overgrown, so stout footwear is advisable and progress through the interior will require some patience. The surviving gable and walls are the main focus; they rise from the vegetation clearly enough to give a sense of the building's original proportions, though the interior offers little beyond the shell. The estuary is close, and the roadside position means the site is not particularly remote, but it is easy to pass without noticing it at all.
