Barrows

Barrow, Ballinvana, Co. Limerick

A field in County Limerick holds the traces of ancient burial mounds that have effectively vanished from the ground, yet can still be detected from the air.

The site at Ballinvana is one of eleven possible barrows, those low, rounded earthen mounds raised over prehistoric burials, compressed into a relatively compact area measuring roughly 300 metres east to west and 200 metres north to south. What makes this cluster quietly remarkable is not what you can see standing in the field, but what you cannot: there are no surface remains visible at all, and the site never appeared on Ordnance Survey Ireland historic maps.

The barrows came to light not through excavation or field survey but through an aerial photograph taken on 3 November 1984, commissioned by Bord Gáis Éireann during pipeline survey work. Aerial photography of this kind frequently reveals cropmarks or soilmarks, subtle differences in how vegetation grows or soil colours that betray buried features invisible at ground level, and it was on examination of that photograph, catalogued as BGE 2562, Site No. 191, that the site was identified. The record was compiled by Martin Fitzpatrick and uploaded to the national record in June 2021. The barrows sit in reclaimed pasture to the south of a watercourse, approximately 600 metres west of the Morningstar River, land that has been worked and altered over generations, which goes some way towards explaining why no earthworks survive above the surface.

For anyone curious enough to seek out the area, the surrounding countryside near the Morningstar River is accessible by road, though the site itself lies on private agricultural land and there is nothing to observe from the field boundary. The value here is less in the visiting than in the knowing: that beneath what looks like ordinary improved pasture, a concentration of prehistoric funerary monuments quietly persists, legible only to a camera on an overcast November day nearly four decades ago.
