Barrows
Somewhere along the north bank of the Keale River in County Limerick, a prehistoric burial mound has effectively erased itself from the landscape.
What was once a raised circular earthwork, enclosed by a fosse, a surrounding ditch dug to define and protect the mound, has sunk back into the wet pasture so completely that aerial imagery taken between 2011 and 2013 shows no surface trace of it whatsoever. The land gives nothing away.
A barrow of this type, a roughly circular mound used for burial during prehistoric times, would once have been a deliberate mark on the landscape, a way of claiming territory and memorialising the dead. This particular example, sitting in the townland of Tulla on the boundary with Darragh Beg, appears to have gone unrecorded during the first systematic mapping of Ireland. The Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1840, which captured countless earthworks and field monuments across the country, makes no mention of it. It surfaces only on the later twenty-five-inch edition of 1897, where it is clearly depicted as a circular mound of approximately ten metres in diameter, enclosed by its fosse. Whether it was simply overlooked by the earlier surveyors, or whether it was more visible later in the century due to changes in land use or drainage, is not recorded.
The site sits in wet pasture close to the Keale River, which forms the townland boundary at this point, and that waterlogged ground may itself explain the mound's disappearance; sustained dampness and agricultural pressure over generations can reduce even substantial earthworks to nothing. Anyone visiting the area should approach with modest expectations. There is no surface feature to find, and the surrounding pasture gives no hint of what the 1897 map recorded. The value of coming here is less about seeing something and more about understanding how thoroughly the Irish landscape can absorb its own past, leaving only a cartographic footnote and a patch of wet grass beside a small river.
