Children’s burial ground, Kilmore, Co. Galway

In the south-west corner of an ancient enclosure at Kilmore in County Galway, a small rectangular plot holds the graves of children who, by the rules of the Church, could not be buried in consecrated ground.

The area measures roughly twelve metres east to west and eight metres north to south, and within it numerous set stones mark individual burials, each oriented east to west in keeping with Christian burial tradition. There are no walls or boundary markers enclosing the plot itself; it sits open within the larger enclosure, its stones arranged quietly in the landscape.

Places like this are known in Ireland as cillíní, or sometimes killeens, informal burial grounds used for unbaptised infants, stillborn children, and occasionally others considered outside the full rites of the Church, including suicides and strangers. For centuries, Catholic doctrine held that unbaptised souls could not enter heaven, and so could not be interred in parish churchyards. Families turned instead to marginal or liminal places, spots already marked by age or sanctity in folk memory, often the sites of earlier enclosures, ringforts, or ancient boundaries. The Kilmore site sits within one such pre-existing enclosure, a detail that places it in a long tradition of reusing older sacred or bounded ground for this purpose. The east-west grave orientation, mirroring the alignment of Christian burial elsewhere, suggests that families here were observing familiar ritual even in the absence of official sanction.
