Ringfort (Rath), Brierfort, Co. Galway

On a north-facing slope in County Galway, a D-shaped earthwork sits in grassland with bogland stretching away to the north-east, quietly holding its form after well over a thousand years.

This is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, typically a circular or near-circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks with a ditch, known as a fosse, dug between them. What makes this particular example worth pausing over is how much of it has survived. Two banks and an intervening fosse are still clearly legible on the ground, and the inner bank retains traces of a stone revetment, a facing of stone used to stabilise and reinforce the earthwork, best preserved along the southern and western arc.

The enclosure measures roughly forty metres east to west and thirty metres north to south, the slightly flattened profile giving it that characteristic D-shape rather than a full circle. Ringforts of this kind were typically built during the early medieval period, broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and functioned as enclosed farmsteads for a single family and their livestock. The two-bank arrangement here, with a fosse between them, suggests a degree of investment in the enclosure's defences or, at minimum, its visible status. There are two gaps in the circuit, one at the east and one at the west, and either could represent the original entrance, though centuries of agricultural use have complicated the picture. A later field wall has been built directly over the outer bank along the northern to north-eastern stretch, a reminder that these sites were rarely left untouched by subsequent generations of farmers working the same ground. A second ringfort lies approximately 180 metres to the south-east, suggesting that this was once a landscape with a degree of early medieval settlement density, two enclosed sites within easy sight of one another across the slope.
