Oghilly House, Oghilly, Co. Galway

What makes Oghilly House worth attention is not drama but survival.

Built around 1770, this L-plan farmhouse in County Galway has held onto its original fabric with unusual fidelity, retaining its timber sliding sash windows and slate roof at a time when many comparable buildings have been stripped back, extended beyond recognition, or simply allowed to fall. The entrance from the road sets the tone: square-plan dressed limestone piers with cut-stone plinths and caps, flanked by pedestrian openings with limestone lintels, the whole gateway composition giving a clear signal that what lies beyond has been looked after.

The house itself is two storeys over three bays, the form that became the standard grammar of the prosperous late eighteenth-century Irish farmhouse: regular window openings, hipped slate roofs, roughcast rendered walls, and a classically proportioned facade that owes more to Georgian restraint than to any local vernacular improvisation. The doorcase is a block-and-start type in tooled limestone, a term for a surround in which alternating large and small blocks project slightly from the wall surface to frame the opening, here topped with a moulded lintel and a cobweb fanlight. The sash windows are particularly telling: twelve-over-eight panes on the ground floor, six-over-six above, the larger lower lights being a detail that tends to disappear first in unsympathetic renovations. On the north elevation of the return, a round-headed stair window with a spoked fanlight adds a quietly decorative note. To the west of the house, a range of single-storey outbuildings runs around three sides of a yard, their pitched slate roofs continuing the line of the lean-to additions at the rear, one with a segmental-arch vehicular entrance wide enough for a cart or carriage.
