Fulacht fia, Raheen Oughter, Co. Galway

In the marshy ground north of a small stream in Raheen Oughter, a Bronze Age cooking site once formed a horseshoe-shaped ridge in the landscape, and may now be gone entirely.

A fulacht fia is a type of ancient outdoor cooking place found in great numbers across Ireland, typically consisting of a mound of fire-cracked stone and burnt soil accumulated beside a trough or water source. The mound here was recorded in October 1982 as measuring 12.7 metres north to south and rising to around 0.6 metres in height, open at its southern end in the classic horseshoe form. Gorse had taken over the eastern and western edges. Later aerial imagery suggests the mound has since been levelled, leaving little or nothing visible above ground.

What gives this particular site an added layer of interest is its company. Two further fulachta fia were recorded roughly 60 and 75 metres to the north-east, which points to this low-lying area having been used repeatedly, perhaps across generations, for the communal or practical activities these sites are associated with. The clustering of fulachta fia is not unusual in Ireland; the low, waterlogged ground that made such sites practical for heating water in timber or stone troughs also tends to preserve the burnt-stone accumulations that mark them. Here, the marshy terrain beside the stream fits that pattern precisely. Whether the three sites were in use at the same time or represent successive episodes of activity spread across centuries is a question the existing record cannot answer.
