What was once a clearly defined circular earthwork, a rath or ringfort of the kind that served as a farmstead enclosure during the early medieval period, was levelled around 1976. Yet despite that destruction, the site refuses to disappear entirely. The land itself keeps the memory: a low swelling of ground to the west and north, a faint depression marking the outer fosse (a defensive ditch, typically dug to reinforce the enclosing bank), and a slight secondary rise running from the south-west to the north-north-east that may represent the remains of an outer counterscarp bank. None of this would stop a casual walker in their tracks, but taken together it describes the ghost of a structure that was once substantial enough to be mapped repeatedly across more than a century.

The Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1842 shows the enclosure as a hachured circle with a diameter of roughly 25 metres, and subsequent editions from 1905 and 1936 confirm it still standing. The site sits in level pasture, which likely made it easier to farm around for generations but also easier, eventually, to simply remove. By the mid-1970s, when agricultural improvement schemes were flattening earthworks across rural Ireland at considerable pace, this one was gone. What survives, measured at 26.8 metres both north to south and east to west, endures not as upstanding archaeology but as differential grass growth, the kind of subtle variation in colour and texture that aerial photography or a sharp eye at low sun can still pick out clearly across an otherwise unremarkable field.
