Ringfort (Rath), Moyge, Co. Cork

What the maps preserved, the mid-twentieth century largely erased.

A ringfort that once rose clearly enough from a south-east-facing slope in Moyge, north Cork to be recorded on Ordnance Survey maps in 1842, 1905, and again in 1936 no longer survives as an upstanding monument. Local knowledge places its levelling somewhere around the 1950s, leaving behind only a shallow fosse, the faint circular outline of the enclosure measuring roughly forty metres across its north-east to south-west axis, and, crossing the interior on a north-west to south-east line, the ghostly ridges of old cultivation strips. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when defined by earthen banks and ditches rather than stone, were the dominant farmstead type of early medieval Ireland, typically dating from around the sixth to the twelfth centuries. Thousands survive across the country, but a significant number were removed during the agricultural intensification that followed the mid-century land improvement schemes.

What makes the Moyge site particularly interesting is not what it once was in isolation, but its position within a much denser concentration of enclosures. The field it sits in contains at least three other circular enclosures and a possible further one, and the whole cluster falls within a coherent field system. The 1905 six-inch map had already noted the external fosse running from east to north-west, and the 1936 revision captured the site as a raised circular area still visibly enclosed. By then the earthwork had already been shrinking. The sequence of maps, read together, tells a quiet story of incremental loss over roughly a century, finishing with the near-total removal that local tradition attributes to the 1950s. What remains is not so much a monument as a legible absence, still just about visible as a scar in the pasture.
