Ringfort (Rath), Gurteennacloona, Co. Cork

A farm lane running through an ancient defensive ditch is an arresting thing once you know what you are walking in.

At Gurteennacloona in north Cork, the fosse of an early medieval ringfort, a flat-bottomed earthen trench once designed to make any approach to a settlement slow and dangerous, has been quietly repurposed as a working laneway, with a low residual ridge of about 0.3 metres still visible along its centre where the original spoil was piled.

A ringfort, or rath, is a circular enclosed settlement, typically of the early medieval period, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches and used as a farmstead or place of refuge. The Gurteennacloona example was still visible as a complete circular enclosure on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, recorded there with a diameter of roughly 45 metres. By the time the 1905 and 1936 OS maps were made, only an arc running from the north-west to the north-east was being shown, suggesting the southern portion had already been lost to cultivation. What survives today is that north-western to eastern arc, consisting of two earthen banks with an intervening fosse seven metres wide. The inner bank still stands to an internal height of just under a metre, and there is a narrow break of 0.7 metres in it to the north-east, possibly the original entrance gap. To the east, a shed has been built directly onto the line of the enclosure, further obscuring what was once a closed circle.

The site sits in tillage ground on the northern side of a farmyard, so much of what remains is embedded in a working agricultural landscape rather than preserved in any formal sense. The fosse-as-laneway detail is the most quietly telling thing here: centuries of daily use have worn down what was once a deliberate obstacle, flattening it into something practical and unremarkable, while the earthworks on either side continue to erode into the surrounding fields.
