There is nothing to see above ground. No bank, no ditch, no raised outline in the grass. The site exists now primarily as a historical fact rather than a physical presence, its circular boundary erased so completely that only cartographic evidence confirms it was ever there.

The Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842 recorded the enclosure clearly enough, plotting a sub-circular shape measuring approximately forty metres north to south and forty-five metres east to west. That scale is fairly typical for a rath, the Gaelic term for this class of monument, which generally consisted of an earthen bank and external fosse enclosing a domestic space. At Ballyglissane, the levelling of that enclosure appears to have been thorough. House foundations have since been sunk within the area of the site, which partly explains the absence of surface trace and also means that whatever archaeology survived the gradual erosion of the earthwork has likely been further disturbed by later construction.

What makes this particular site quietly striking is the gap between what the map preserves and what the ground now offers. The 1842 survey caught the enclosure at some point before it disappeared entirely, fixing its dimensions and rough outline in ink while the physical monument was already, presumably, in decline. The ringfort at Ballyglissane is a reminder that the Irish landscape holds a great many sites like this, legible only through older records, their presence registered not in stone or turf but in the archive of a map drawn by soldiers nearly two centuries ago.
