Ringfort (Rath), Garraneycarney, Co. Cork

On a south-facing slope just north of the Foherish River in mid Cork, a slight rise in the pasture marks something considerably older than the farmland surrounding it.

The difference in height between the inside and outside of the enclosing bank, roughly seventy centimetres on the interior face and a full two metres on the exterior, gives a sense of how deliberately this structure was built to present a solid front to the world outside. In places, the earthen bank is still faced with stone on its outer side, a detail that hints at an original construction more finished and deliberate than a simple field boundary.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval settlement monument found across Ireland. Typically dating from somewhere between the sixth and tenth centuries, raths served as enclosed farmsteads, the bank and any associated ditch providing a degree of security for a household, its livestock, and its stored goods. This example measures twenty-one metres east to west, placing it at the smaller end of the scale, and its entrance, two and a half metres wide, faces to the south-south-east. The interior slopes gently downward toward the south and is currently covered in bracken, which tends to colonise disturbed or formerly occupied ground with little encouragement. The river nearby would have made the location practical for any early farming community, offering water and perhaps some natural boundary to the south.
