Ringfort (Rath), Ballyshoneen, Co. Cork

A ploughed field in mid Cork contains the partial ghost of a structure that was already ancient when the Normans arrived in Ireland.

At Ballyshoneen, a ringfort survives in a state that is somewhere between present and erased, its circular outline still readable in the landscape but only just. A ringfort, sometimes called a rath, is a type of enclosed farmstead typical of the early medieval period in Ireland, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries, in which a family and their livestock would have lived within a raised earthen bank. Thousands once existed across the country; a great many have been lost to exactly the process visible here.

The site describes a circle roughly 47 metres in diameter. The defining earthen bank, which once ran all the way around, now survives only along the arc from north-northeast to northwest, where it still stands to a height of about 1.8 metres. Everywhere else it has been levelled, presumably through centuries of cultivation. What remains has been absorbed into the field boundary system, the old bank repurposed as a fence line and so preserved, almost incidentally, by the same agricultural activity that destroyed the rest. The interior is under tillage, meaning the enclosed ground that would once have held a household is regularly turned over by the plough.

There is a particular kind of archaeological melancholy in a site like this, not because it is ruined, but because its partial survival makes its former shape legible. The surviving arc is enough to reconstruct the circle mentally, and to understand that what looks like an ordinary field margin was once the outer wall of someone's world.
