Ringfort (Rath), Courtbrack, Co. Cork

A low circular rise in a pasture field near Courtbrack in mid-Cork is easy to walk past without registering what it is.

The earthen bank still stands to around two and a half metres, enclosing a roughly circular interior some twenty-five metres across, and along its northern inner face there are remnants of stone facing, hinting that this was once a more carefully constructed boundary than the grassed-over mound suggests today. A ringfort, or rath, is an enclosed farmstead of early medieval Ireland, typically dating from the period between the fifth and twelfth centuries; thousands survive across the country, but each has its own particular details, and this one has a few worth noting.

The western side of the site is skirted by a laneway, and where the two meet, a fosse, the outer ditch that would once have reinforced the bank as a defensive or status boundary, survives to a depth of around seventy centimetres. The outer fence of that laneway may itself be the remnant of a second, lower bank, still standing to roughly one and a half metres. The entrance gap, five metres wide, faces east, which is a common orientation for ringfort entrances, likely connected with the position of the rising sun. The interior has been planted with coniferous trees, which both preserves and obscures it. What gives this particular site a small additional layer of interest is a discovery made during ploughing about ten metres to the north: a shallow stone-lined pit containing a brown, putty-like clay mixed with flecks of charcoal. The precise nature of that deposit has not been determined, but pits of this kind, found in association with ringforts, sometimes relate to craft activity, burning, or ritual deposits, and the charcoal hints at some kind of deliberate use rather than simple accumulation.
