Ringfort (Rath), Cooscroneen, Co. Cork

On a north-facing slope in West Cork, an early medieval enclosure sits quietly in pasture, its two-metre earthen and stone bank still holding much of its original profile after more than a thousand years.

What makes this particular rath, the Irish term for a roughly circular enclosure built to define a farmstead and its immediate zone of activity, quietly revealing is how thoroughly it has been absorbed into the working landscape around it. The bank has been stone-faced on its inner side, the external ditch to the south-east has silted up over centuries, and the whole structure has been folded into the surrounding field fence system, so that the boundary of an early medieval household now doubles as an ordinary agricultural boundary.

The enclosure measures approximately twenty metres north to south and twenty-two metres east to west, making it a modest but complete example of its type. Around the eastern arc through to the west-northwest, the bank survives to a height of two metres; from there, continuing around to the east, the boundary drops to a natural or constructed scarp of around 1.2 metres, topped in places by a low earth and stone field fence. The fosse, the external ditch that would originally have reinforced the enclosure's boundary, lies to the south-east and is now largely silted. Perhaps the most telling detail inside the enclosure is a set of cultivation ridges running on a north-north-east to south-south-east axis. On the northern side, where the hillslope dips, these ridges have been deliberately raised to level out the growing surface, a small but precise piece of agricultural engineering that suggests the interior was being worked as growing ground at some point in its history, whether during the original occupation or considerably later.
