Water mill – horizontal-wheeled, Lisheens, Co. Wicklow

On the western bank of the Brittas River in County Wicklow, roughly 200 metres upstream of Lisheens House, three oak timbers lie embedded in the riverbank at a depth of around 1.2 metres.

They are the remains of a horizontal-wheeled water mill, a type of early milling technology in which a wheel mounted flat in the water drives a millstone directly above it without the need for gearing. Simple in principle and widespread across early medieval Ireland, these mills were quietly efficient enough to have fed communities for centuries, and traces of them tend to survive only where the right conditions of waterlogged soil and good fortune coincide.

The timbers were recorded by Sullivan in 1994 and are, by the account of that inspection, in a good state of preservation, which is itself unusual for structural wood in an exposed riverbank context. The lowest of the three is a square-cut oak beam with a rectangular mortise hole cut partway through it, a joinery detail that suggests it once formed part of a load-bearing frame, perhaps supporting a vertical shaft or the structure above the wheel. Resting on top of it is a radially split timber, a piece produced by cleaving a log along its grain rather than sawing across it, a technique that produces stronger, more durable planks and is commonly associated with medieval craftsmanship. The uppermost timber is badly damaged and could not be identified from surface inspection alone, and it appears not to be in direct contact with the timbers beneath it. Two sizeable stones also rest on the basal beam, though their purpose is unclear. They may have served as weights, supports, or simply accumulated there over time.
