Enclosure, Hollywood, Co. Wicklow

In a stretch of marshy ground near Hollywood in County Wicklow, a circle of dry land about thirty metres across quietly contradicts its surroundings.

Where the terrain around it is wet, the interior stays dry, and from the right vantage point, or from the air, the difference in vegetation gives the whole thing away as a cropmark, the kind of subtle colour and texture shift in grass or crops that signals something buried or altered beneath the surface.

What defines the circle is a fosse, a ditch cut into the ground, whose outline has persisted through centuries of agricultural use and gradual boggy encroachment. Enclosures of this type are found across Ireland and are generally understood as the boundaries of early settlement, either domestic or ritual in function, though determining which usually requires excavation. The fosse would originally have defined a raised or at least distinct inner area, separating whatever lay inside from the wider landscape. That this one survives at all in marshy terrain, where waterlogging and peat formation tend to swallow earthworks entirely, makes its persistence quietly remarkable.
