Ringfort (Rath), Drumbawn, Co. Wicklow

On a northwest-facing slope in Drumbawn, County Wicklow, a modest earthwork sits at the point where the gradient momentarily eases, as though whoever chose the site was looking for a natural pause in the hillside.

It is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval enclosure found across the Irish countryside. Thousands were built between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries, most likely as farmsteads for a single family and their livestock, and they are so widespread that it is easy to become numb to them. This one, though, rewards a closer look simply for what it does and does not reveal.

The enclosure is nearly circular, measuring around 40 metres north to south and 42 metres east to west. It is defined by a bank of earth and stone, the bank varying in width from about three metres on the eastern and western sides to a more substantial six metres on the northern side, and rising to roughly one metre in height. Outside the bank runs a fosse, the dry ditch that would have been dug to provide the material for the bank itself, ranging from three metres wide on the east-northeast to five metres on the west. What is notably absent is any clear sign of an original entrance or any trace of internal features, the post-holes, hearths, or structural outlines that sometimes survive in better-preserved examples. The asymmetry of the bank, thicker on the northern side, may reflect the practical demands of the slope or simply the labour available at the time of construction. Without excavation, the silence on those questions is complete.
