It leaves no trace visible at the surface, yet its existence is recorded with quiet confidence: a predecessor to the current church, positioned a short distance to the north-east of it, swallowed entirely by time and soil.

The sole scholarly reference comes from Davies, writing in 1948, who noted the site's location relative to the standing church without being able to point to anything physically present. Early Irish churches of this type were typically modest timber or dry-stone structures, built before the more durable Romanesque architecture of the twelfth century took hold across the island. Their footprints are easily lost to later building, agricultural disturbance, or simple decay. At Clifferna, whatever once stood there has left no upstanding remains, no earthwork, no obvious depression in the ground that a casual visitor might notice. It exists now as a cartographic memory, a point on a map that refers to something no longer legible in the landscape.
