Earthwork, Ross, Co. Clare
Co. Clare |
Ritual/Ceremonial
In the townland of Ross in County Clare, an earthwork sits in the landscape, formally recorded as an archaeological monument but largely uncharacterised in any publicly available detail.
That gap is itself a kind of story. Ireland's archaeological record contains thousands of earthworks, a broad category that can encompass anything from the enclosing banks of a ringfort, which was a circular defended farmstead typically dating from the early medieval period, to the eroded remains of field boundaries, burial mounds, or ceremonial enclosures whose original purpose has long since blurred. Without further documentation, the earthwork at Ross belongs to that quietly numerous class of sites that have been noted, mapped, and assigned a reference number, but whose particulars remain waiting.
