Enclosure, Ballynasculloge, Co. Wicklow

In the Wicklow landscape near Ballynasculloge, aerial photography taken in 1973 revealed what appears to be one or more ancient enclosures pressed into the ground, invisible at eye level but legible from the air as cropmarks or soil shadows.

That gap between what cannot be seen on foot and what suddenly becomes clear from above is part of what makes sites like this quietly compelling. Enclosures of this kind are among the most common archaeological features in Ireland, typically circular or oval boundaries defined by a bank and ditch, used across many centuries for purposes ranging from settlement and livestock management to ritual activity, though the precise function at any individual site usually resists easy answers.

The Ballynasculloge site was catalogued in 1986 as an enclosure of multiple form, meaning the aerial evidence suggested more than one enclosure or a more complex arrangement of boundaries rather than a single ring. By 1995 it was reconsidered and listed as a possible enclosure, a downgrade in certainty that reflects how much interpretation depends on photographic quality, weather conditions at the time of the flight, and subsequent changes to the land surface. The original aerial photography was carried out by the Geological Survey of Ireland in 1973 and covered a sequence of overlapping frames across the area. Without ground investigation, the site remains in that uncertain middle category that characterises a significant portion of Ireland's known archaeological record, present enough to be recorded, ambiguous enough to resist firm conclusions.
