Enclosure, Cannow Mountain, Co. Wicklow

On a gentle south-west-facing slope of Cannow Mountain in County Wicklow, there is a small enclosure that exists, for most practical purposes, only as a shape seen from the air.

Roughly subcircular and modest in scale, measuring approximately twelve metres north to south and fourteen metres east to west, it is the kind of feature that registers on aerial photography but leaves little obvious trace for someone walking the ground. Enclosures of this general type are common across the Irish upland landscape, often interpreted as the remains of early settlement, small farmsteads, or stock enclosures, though without excavation it is rarely possible to say which.

The site first entered the formal record in 1986, when it was catalogued as an enclosure identified from an aerial photograph. Later aerial photography taken around 2005 confirmed the subcircular outline was still legible from above. That such a feature survives at all on an exposed mountain slope is quietly interesting; the very gentleness of the south-westerly aspect that made the location attractive to whoever once used it may also have helped preserve the faint earthwork against the more aggressive erosion that steeper ground would bring.
