A square enclosure, thirty metres by thirty metres, has been levelled so thoroughly that its outline survives only as a low, linear scatter of small stones running along the northern and western sides. Without knowing what you were looking for, you could walk straight across it.

What the stones represent is an enclosed settlement site, the kind of roughly square or rectilinear enclosure associated with early agricultural occupation in Ireland. These were typically domestic spaces, defined by earthen banks or stone walls that marked out a farmstead or small community from the surrounding landscape. At Trooperstown, those boundaries have largely dissolved back into the hillside. The one object that anchors the site to human activity is a fragment of a granite rotary quern found on the ground. A rotary quern is a hand-operated grinding stone, used to mill grain by rotating one circular stone against another, and its presence here points to settled, domestic life rather than anything ceremonial or martial. Grain was being processed on this slope at some point, by people who had built a defined space in which to live and work.

The site sits at a natural break in the slope, which would have made it a practical choice for levelling ground and constructing an enclosure. The gradient falls away to the west, and the position offers the kind of sheltered, workable platform that early farmers tended to favour. The quern fragment and the faint stone lines are all that remain of whoever chose this particular spot.
