Fort, Drumreask, Co. Monaghan

On the eastern slope of a drumlin in County Monaghan, there is a near-perfect circle of beech trees enclosing a patch of grass and scrub roughly thirty-five metres across.

From a distance it looks like an ornamental planting, or perhaps a small wood that was never cleared. Look more carefully and the ground tells a different story: an earthen bank runs beneath those trees, an outer drain follows the same arc, and the whole arrangement slopes gently downhill to the east with no visible gap where a gate or entrance might once have been.

The 1834 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map marks the site in gothic script as a fort, which in Irish cartographic convention of the period typically signals an earthwork of early medieval origin rather than a military installation in any later sense. A rath, to give the more precise term, was a ringfort, the enclosed farmstead of an early Irish landowner, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches surrounding a domestic interior. The Drumreask example fits that pattern closely, though the absence of any identifiable entrance complicates a straightforward reading. By 1908 the same OS map shows the site reduced to the outline of a small field, suggesting that at some point in the intervening decades it was absorbed into the working agricultural landscape rather than left as open ground. The beech planting along the bank points to a further adaptation: what may have begun as a prehistoric or early medieval enclosure was later dressed up as a tree-ring, a landscaping device sometimes used on Irish estates to mark boundaries or provide shelter, which gradually took on a life of its own as the original earthwork beneath it was forgotten.
