Fort, Lisagore, Co. Monaghan

What it once enclosed, and who built it, remains an open question, but the shape and construction place it within the broad family of early Irish enclosed settlements, the kind of low earthen fort that once dotted the Irish countryside in their thousands, most now reduced to faint traces or ploughed entirely away.

The enclosure at Lisagore measures roughly 45 metres along its longer axis and about 26 metres across, oriented along the natural lie of the drumlin. Its defining feature is an earthen bank that shifts in character as it curves around the site. At the northern end the bank is relatively modest, a few metres wide at its base and rising less than a metre. Towards the west it becomes more pronounced, presenting a low scarp around a metre and a half in height, while the southern arc has spread and flattened into a broad, gentle rise. The interior slopes downward to the south by about three metres, which would have given the site a natural drainage advantage. There is no surviving fosse, the kind of external ditch that typically accompanies such enclosures, and no clearly identifiable original entrance. A later field bank bisects the monument on a north-south line, and east of that division the earthwork has disappeared altogether, most likely cleared or disturbed during agricultural improvement at some point after the fort fell out of use.
