On a drumlin ridge in County Monaghan, an oval enclosure sits quietly at the summit, grass and scrub growing over earthworks that have long outlasted whatever activity once took place within them.

Drumlins, those elongated hills of glacial till that give Monaghan its famously lumpy terrain, made natural platforms for enclosures of this kind, lifting a site above the surrounding land and lending it a degree of visibility or defensibility that a valley floor could not provide. What survives here is the kind of earthwork that can be easy to walk past without reading it correctly, its outlines softened by centuries of growth and weathering.

The enclosure measures roughly 37 metres along its longer axis and 25 metres across, defined by an earthen bank that, on its south-eastern side, still rises to an external height of about 2.4 metres at its most substantial. An outer fosse, the term for a defensive ditch dug around an enclosure, survives as a berm, a flat shelf of ground about 3 metres wide, visible on the north-western and north-eastern edges. A berm of this kind typically represents what remains when a fosse has been partially filled or eroded over time. There is a gap in the perimeter to the north-north-east, but the original entrance is considered more likely to be the opening on the eastern side, where the base measures 1.3 metres across. The site sits at the south-western end of a north-east to south-west drumlin ridge, a position that would have placed it at the edge of the high ground rather than its centre, a detail that may reflect something deliberate in how the enclosure was sited.
