Megalithic structure, Meenanare, Co. Kerry

In the townland of Meenanare in County Kerry, a megalithic structure sits on the landscape, old enough to predate written record by several thousand years.

Megalithic monuments, a broad category covering everything from portal tombs and passage graves to stone rows and standing stones, were built during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, roughly between 4000 and 500 BC, by communities whose names and beliefs we can only infer from what they left behind in stone. That something of this kind survives in Meenanare is itself notable; Kerry has a remarkable concentration of prehistoric monuments, and each one represents a decision made, labour organised, and ground chosen for reasons that still invite speculation.
