Stone Monuments
In a quiet corner of Kilcaskan graveyard in County Cork, just south-east of the old church, a slender upright stone carries a message that has been partially lost for centuries.
It stands 1.2 metres tall and barely wider than a hand, and along its edges run the notched marks of an ogham inscription, the early medieval Irish writing system in which letters are represented by lines and scores cut along a central stemline. The stone has not survived intact: its top is broken off, and with it has gone the middle portion of whatever name or formula was once carved there.
